Just a short note about our June 7 meeting in connection with our continued study of the Doctors of the Church. I’ll be discussing the first five Doctors in Pope Benedict‘s book who are: Saint Athanasius of Alexandria, Saint Ephrem, Saint Hilary of Poitiers, Saint Cyril of Jerusalem and Saint Basil.
Pope Benedict‘s book is difficult to acquire, there is also a book called “The 35 Doctors of the Church” by Fr. Christopher Rengers and Dr. Matthew Bunson, that I think some folks may have picked up. The chapters are quite a bit longer than Pope Benedict’s book and so doing five of the doctors may be a bit long, so maybe we can discuss in the meeting how we will manage the pace going forward.
One thing to note about the Rengers and Bunson book — in that one Saint Basil is the sixth chapter, not the fifth. (Of course, we also can rely on that infallible source, Captain Google, to come up with some basic biographical backgrounds, if needed.)
At all events, I think the lives of these great Saints are packed with drama and inspiration, so I’m looking forward to discussing them!
Please feel free to pass these notes along to the rest of the guys.
Best
Steve
